The Under-Representation Gap

Studies have shown that early life disparities hinder both educational attainment and mobility for under-represented groups:

  • When compared to higher income counterparts, high achieving lower income students are less likely to attain undergraduate (54% vs 78%) or graduate degrees (29% vs 47%).

    -Achievement Trap, 2009

  • According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, of the students that graduated in 2019, minority students were less likely to be enrolled in college (Caucasian 89.9%, Asian 66.9%, Hispanic 63.4% & African American 50.7%).

    -Diversity in Higher Education, 2021

  • In 2019, when comparing individuals with disabilities to those without, the college attainment gap ranged from 5.4% to 14.1% in the United States.
